DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE:

This project was created to promote the development of an economically depressed area in the Peruvian Andes, in the Sierra de Lima, located about 350 km northeast of the capital. In this region, at an average altitude of 3500 meters above sea level, cattle have always been raised. At the same time, the production and consumption of cheese is traditional, although it is done on a family basis.

The organization Associacion Turistica Agroganadera Nuevo Progreso de Santa Leonor (ATAGNUPSAL), a consortium of three campesino pueblos (Mayobamba, Jucul, Parquin) has received funding from the Regional Government of Lima and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano thanks to the interest of CEDRUM (Peruvian NGO) and VSF ITALIA Alto Adige Group. The purpose of this funding is to build a dairy farm on a professional basis, to organize a system for the daily collection of milk, which will have to be transformed into cheese or yogurt, and to establish training courses for farmers on the hygienic milking procedures, the sanitary monitoring of the udder and milk.

The importance of hygiene and prevention was emphasized, in order to improve milk quality and avoid excessive and indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
